Primate’s Square changes the mood of a walk after the Old Town Hall. Its pink palace façade draws your attention, but there is more to notice than a single view of the building.
When visiting Primate’s Palace during your stay at Villa Šanca, choose between a short outdoor stop and a longer visit to the reception rooms. First decide what interests you and check which spaces are currently accessible.
A building designed to impress
Built between 1778 and 1781 for Archbishop József Batthyány, the palace still expresses its ceremonial purpose. The balanced façade, rooftop sculptures and coat of arms beneath a cardinal’s hat reward a slow look from the square, both as a whole and in detail.
Find St George in the courtyard
If the entrance is open, look for the fountain showing St George with the dragon. Arcades and stonework offer a more enclosed view of the palace, with different proportions and acoustics from the main square.
Events and day-to-day operations may restrict passages. Avoid planning a route on the assumption that every gateway will always lead through to another street.
Why the Hall of Mirrors matters
The hall is associated with the Peace of Pressburg of 1805. Representatives of the French and Austrian sides concluded the agreement; Napoleon and the Austrian emperor did not personally sign it there. The distinction is worth keeping in mind when reading simplified accounts.
Historic reception rooms and a collection of English tapestries provide further reasons to go inside. Check access, opening times and admission before visiting. An open courtyard does not imply free entry throughout the building.
Match the stop to your pace
Allow a short pause for exterior details within a walking route, or set aside longer for the displays. Afterwards, return to the Main Square or take a break in the historic streets. The palace becomes part of an enjoyable day rather than another box to tick.
